The Collaborative Female Brain

Women’s neurobiological responses are, by comparison, generally more focused towards the human and relational side of an activity, interaction or task. A look at the underpinning neurological response in the brain shows that women more naturally focus on the human element. Another fascinating study exposed a group of adult men and women to a flow of different images comprising mechanical objects and human figures. The images were projected in quick succession into the exact same part of the visual field using a stereoscope. The recall of the two sexes was then tested. It revealed that men recalled seeing more mechanical objects and the women remembered seeing more human figures (McGuinness and Symonds 1977).

This indicates where female attention is more likely to go. What does this mean though? Women on average have a greater capacity to empathise spontaneously than most men. Baron-Cohen defines empathising as ‘the drive to identify another person’s emotions and thoughts, and to respond to them with an appropriate emotion’ (Baron-Cohen 2003).

Women clearly need to be able to read emotion well to be able to empathise. Studies show that women possess a superior ability to read emotion in others, even through minute facial expressions, than most men (Buck et al. 1972; Baron-Cohen et al. 2001). They also score more highly, on average, on their capacity to respond emotionally appropriately (Hoffman 1977; Eisenberg and Lennon 1983).

Many similar research studies that show that, on average, males display greater interest in how mechanistic systems work and, on average, females display greater interest in and attention to the human, intuitive side of the equation.
